Under the supervision of general contractor Turner Construction, state-of-the-art electrical systems were installed at a new regional bio-containment laboratory that included offices, animal areas and testing rooms. The 14-month project required numerous special considerations to meet government standards for containment, including sealing all conduit, devices, boxes and fixtures throughout the facility, and installing significant back-up power sources fed by two power utilities. Connelly Electric installed the underground duct bank system for two 13.4 kV medium voltage feeders which tie into the main substation of the entire Argonne Campus. The lighting system within animal holding and testing areas was specially designed to mimic day and night environments, and all wash, decontamination and bedding areas were sealed to ensure containment. All phone and data systems, fire alarms and low-volt systems were tied to the main campus infrastructure. |
